Covingham Park Primary School

Caring for Pupils, Promoting Success

Maths

Maths is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology, engineering, and is necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality Maths education therefore provides: a foundation for understanding the world; the ability to reason mathematically; an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics; and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Maths Curriculum Intent:

At Covingham Park, children will make progress in their Maths learning and become confident in both mental and written methods which they can rely on to support them when solving problems. Children will become more fluent with number and are able to manipulate and ‘play’ with number. They will increasingly notice patterns and use this to build on their prior knowledge, confidently using the sentence stem: “Because I know… then I know…”. Children will develop the ability to reason and explain their thinking in order to justify their answers.

Maths Curriculum Implementation:

Maths across the school is taught with a mastery approach: the aim is that all children achieve in the lesson.  We start with all children practicing general fluency, then they move on to solving worded problems, and finally to applying their knowledge and skills to a reasoning activity. Each child progresses through the activities at their own pace throughout the lesson.
