Covingham Park Primary School

Caring for Pupils, Promoting Success

Computing

Intent

At Covingham Park Primary School, our vision is to provide every child with an outstanding education, which equips them with the necessary skills to meet changes and challenges throughout their life. Technology is changing the lives of everyone. Through teaching Computing, we aim to equip children to participate in a rapidly-changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology. We aim to enable them to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information. We also focus on developing the skills necessary for children to be able to use information in a discriminating and effective way. Our computing curriculum is driven by our belief that computing skills are a major factor in enabling children to be confident, creative and independent learners.

Implementation

We provide children with a high-quality computing education which enables them to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Our computing curriculum has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology. The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use computers to create and use programs, systems and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.

Teachers are responsible for the planning and implementation of a high-quality computing education at CPPS. Please refer to our progression of skills and school overview to see termly units and objectives taught across the year groups. These objectives come under the headings of using computers, coding, networks and e-safety.

Impact

Our overall vision is that children at CPPS can use technology in a safe and creative way. They are able to use a variety of different hardware and software systems and can work both independently and collaboratively for a variety of purposes. Children build upon previous learning towards a clear progression of skills. Ongoing assessments take place throughout the year where teachers use this information to inform future lessons, ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately.
