Art and Design

At CPPS, our art curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, foster resilience, and develop strong oracy skills in our students. We believe that through art, children can explore their creativity, express their ideas, and understand the world around them in a meaningful way. Our intent is to provide a rich and diverse art education that encourages our children to experiment, take risks, and persevere in their artistic endeavours. Art provides a unique opportunity for students to build resilience. We encourage our students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and develop a growth mindset. Effective communication is at the heart of our art curriculum. We place a strong emphasis on developing students' oracy skills, enabling them to articulate their ideas, thoughts, and emotions clearly and confidently. Through group discussions, critiques, and presentations, students learn to use appropriate vocabulary, actively listen, and engage in meaningful dialogues about their work and that of others. We aim to ignite a sense of wonder and curiosity in our students by exposing them to a wide range of artistic styles, techniques, and cultures. Students are encouraged to ask questions, seek out new knowledge, and develop a lifelong love for the arts.

Implementation
At Covingham Park Primary School, Art and Design is taught as part of their termly topic work throughout the year. Art and Design engages and inspires children to create art work with a real purpose by displaying and sharing their work in weekly celebration assemblies, around the school environment and through our ‘Expressive Arts Week’ in Spring. Children are encouraged to use their imagination and express themselves through a variety of media. The use of sketchbooks encourages children to design and evaluate their own work and work of other artists and craftspeople.

Impact
Ongoing teacher assessments take place throughout the year. focusing on the skills being taught. Children are encouraged to comment on their own and others work.  Teachers use this information to inform future lessons, ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately.
