Intent
In our school the teaching of a foreign language (French), encourages pupilsâ confidence and creative skills. We help them develop an awareness of cultural differences through the study of language. We teach the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, which are necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts and lay the foundations for future language learning are embedded within a well-structured curriculum.
The teaching of French is Inspiring, providing children with excitement, enjoyment and challenge, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning through life. Our French curriculum is designed to progressively develop childrenâs skills acquisition, and their ability to use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics â building resilience year upon year. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. Special days, such as âInternational Mother Language Dayâ and âEuropean Day of Languagesâ develop curiosity amongst children and the wider school community.
Implementation
Children develop their love of language learning and develop skills throughout their time at CPPS. In our scheme of work - âLanguage Angelsâ (KS2) â the French curriculum has a focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as making children aware of grammatical features of the French language. Teachers follow the sequence of lessons from this scheme of work adapted to suit our pupils covering a wide variety of topics and themes. Weekly lessons are taught, ensuring progression by building on previous lessons. Previous language will be revised, recalled and consolidated whenever possible and appropriate.
We provide a rich curriculum that develops both linguistic skills and cultural awareness, encouraging curiosity and confidence in communication.
