Maths is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology, engineering, and is necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality Maths education therefore provides: a foundation for understanding the world; the ability to reason mathematically; an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics; and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.
Maths Intent
At Covingham Park, our Maths curriculum aims to inspire children to become confident in both mental and written methods which they can rely on as mathematicians of the future; be this in the STEM fields or as a confident, numerate adults. Children will become curious about number and will be able to manipulate and ‘play’ with number – noticing patterns and relationships between numbers and shapes. Children will build resilience in their problem-solving and reasoning skills, applying their foundational knowledge to real-life problems in a variety of contexts. Children will develop the ability to reason and explain their thinking in order to justify their answers. Through these problems, children are exposed to the importance of Maths outside of the classroom and beyond their schooling years.
Maths Curriculum Implementation:
Maths across the school is taught with a mastery approach: the aim is that all children achieve in the lesson. We start with all children practicing general fluency, then they move on to solving worded problems, and finally to applying their knowledge and skills to a reasoning activity. Each child progresses through the activities at their own pace throughout the lesson.
